Hamirpur: Tension after viral video, police station surrounded, and NH-34 blocked

The situation turned tense in Sumerpur town of Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday when a video allegedly showing a Muslim youth in a compromising situation with a Hindu girl went viral on social media. The video sparked outrage among the girl’s family and various Hindu organizations. The family alleged that the youth had been blackmailing the girl for several days using the video and pressuring her, but when she refused to comply, he allegedly made the video public on social media platforms.

As soon as the video went viral, chaos erupted in the area, and a large number of Hindu organization members, along with the victim’s family, gathered in Sumerpur town. They surrounded the Sumerpur police station, demanding immediate and strict action against the accused. The angry protesters blocked National Highway-34, disrupting traffic for a considerable time and causing inconvenience to commuters. During this time, a section of the agitated crowd also pelted stones at the accused youth’s house, further escalating tensions in the area. Upon receiving the information, police and administrative officials arrived at the scene and attempted to bring the situation under control. Additional police forces were deployed to maintain law and order.

The victim girl’s brother told the media that if strict action is not taken against the accused soon, he might be forced to take extreme measures like suicide. Hindu organizations warned that the agitation would be intensified if their demands are not met. The accused youth has been identified as Afan Khan, and it is also alleged that his father, Maulana Khan, is an office-bearer of the AIMIM party and has previously contested assembly elections. However, these claims have not yet been officially confirmed by the police.
