Main Reference: Bhavishya Purana
According to the scriptures, after the Dwapar Yuga (the era of the Mahabharata war), the Kali Yuga began. This was a time when the Mahabharata war caused massive destruction and loss of life across the world, including the untimely deaths of many scholars and teachers from various fields. As a result, they could not fully transfer their knowledge and learning to others.
Bhavishya Purana reveals the secret: How so many languages and non-Sanatan religions/sects emerged
Based on the Bhavishya Purana and other Puranas, there is a detailed account of the decline of religion, knowledge, and language in Kali Yuga, including the disappearance of Sanskrit and the rise of Prakrit and other languages.
Kali’s Austerity and Vishnu’s Boon
According to the Bhavishya Purana, at the beginning of Kali Yuga, the entity ‘Kali’ performed severe penance to Lord Vishnu and asked for a boon to increase his influence on earth. Lord Vishnu granted this boon, saying that in Kali Yuga, religion, truth, and knowledge would decline. People would forget the language of the Vedas and scriptures (Sanskrit), and Prakrit and other dialects would emerge. This would distance the common people from the original form of Vedic knowledge and religion.
Disappearance of Sanskrit and Loss of Knowledge/Religion
The Bhavishya Purana clearly states that as Sanskrit faded, knowledge of the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, etc., also became inaccessible to ordinary people. This led to the decline of core religious principles, values, and Sanatan wisdom because accurate translation and interpretation of the Vedas was not possible in Prakrit and other languages.
Impact of Kali Yuga and Birth of New Languages
According to the Bhavishya Purana and other texts, regional languages and dialects (like Prakrit, Pali, Apabhramsha, etc.) emerged in place of Sanskrit. As a result, many beliefs, sects, and religions began to develop, since the unified source of knowledge disappeared and every region started forming its own interpretations.
• Different regions of the world developed languages and dialects based on limited knowledge. • Different regions of the world developed languages and dialects based on limited knowledge.
• As Sanskrit disappeared, people lost touch with the Vedas, Puranas, and true knowledge, leading to the creation of various new sects and religions based on their own interpretations.
“The sins of Kali Yuga consumed all religions, holy texts disappeared, and hypocrites, using their own intellect, invented many sects.” — Ramcharitmanas, Uttarkand 97 (a)
Global Impact
The fragmentation of language halted the global spread of Vedic knowledge, and new languages, sects, and religious ideologies emerged in different regions based on memory or incomplete knowledge.
This distanced the world from the original Vedic Sanatan religion and wisdom.
Conclusion:
According to the Bhavishya Purana, due to Kali’s influence and Lord Vishnu’s boon, Sanskrit gradually disappeared in Kali Yuga, giving rise to Prakrit and other languages. This led to the loss of knowledge and religion, and the birth of new sects, religions, and languages worldwide.
Therefore, to re-establish Sanatan Dharma, learning Sanskrit is essential. Only through Sanskrit can we access true knowledge and dispel the darkness of Kali. This will help uncover the secrets of our weaponry, space knowledge, technology, and life’s mysteries, and enable us to confront the violence and terrorism spread by both Sanatan and non-Sanatan people.
