A major and positive development has emerged from the hill state of Uttarakhand. Digital connectivity in the state’s remote and border areas has set a new record.
Under the Digital India Fund initiated by the central government, 557 new mobile towers have been installed, providing strong 4G connectivity for the first time to 1,231 villages. Out of a total of 16,456 villages in Uttarakhand, 16,305 villages are now covered by digital networks, meaning nearly 99% of villages have internet access.

The technological expansion doesn’t stop there. 5G services have already been launched in nearly one-third of the villages, reaching high-speed internet to 4,729 villages.
The impact of this digital expansion goes beyond just network coverage. It is enhancing education, healthcare services, access to online government schemes, and strengthening the rural economy.

The state government is now further strengthening broadband connectivity under the BharatNet project, linking Gram Panchayats so that even residents in hilly areas can enjoy city-level digital facilities.
In other words, areas that were once isolated from communication are now emerging as strong examples of Digital India in the hills.
