INDIA FIRST . LUCKNOW . ABHISHEK YADAV

A devastating fire broke out in a slum area of Lucknow on Wednesday evening, reducing more than 250 huts to ashes and leaving hundreds homeless. The tragedy claimed the lives of two minor sisters, aged approximately 2 years and 2 months, who were unable to escape the blaze.

Scene of Devastation

By Thursday morning, the site presented a grim picture—charred remains of homes, burnt household items, and families sifting through debris in search of anything salvageable. Many residents lost their entire life savings in the fire, which spread rapidly through the densely packed settlement.

Several displaced families were shifted overnight to nearby rain baseras (temporary shelters) by local authorities, while others spent the night in open spaces, including vacant plots.

Allegations by Residents

Some affected residents, particularly women, alleged that the fire may have been deliberately set. They claimed that certain individuals had earlier threatened them to vacate the land, warning of dire consequences if they refused.

According to these claims, the residents had been asked to remove their huts, and when they did not comply, the settlement was allegedly set on fire. However, these allegations have not yet been officially confirmed, and authorities have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Concerns Over Emergency Response

Residents also raised concerns about the response time of emergency services, stating that a quicker arrival of fire brigade teams might have helped contain the damage and save belongings.

Fire officials, meanwhile, are assessing the situation and determining the exact cause of the blaze.

Heavy Police Deployment

In view of rising tensions and the possibility of unrest, heavy police force has been deployed in the Vikasnagar area since Thursday morning. Security personnel equipped with protective gear have been stationed to maintain law and order.

Relief and Compensation Process

Authorities have begun preparing a list of affected families to facilitate relief and rehabilitation measures. However, no official announcement regarding compensation has been made so far.

Government officials have assured that appropriate assistance will be provided after a detailed assessment.

Investigation Ongoing

The district administration and fire department are currently investigating the incident to determine whether the fire was accidental or intentional. Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the inquiry to proceed.
