The Madhya Pradesh government has taken an important and flexible decision regarding the holiday on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti. As per the order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD), district collectors have now been given the authority to declare the holiday based on local conditions.
This year, Mahavir Jayanti will be observed on March 31, 2026 (Tuesday). However, considering representations from various social organizations and local demands, the state government has introduced a flexible approach.
Collectors Can Choose Between March 30 or 31
According to the official order, if deemed appropriate due to administrative or local reasons, district collectors can declare a holiday on March 30, 2026 (Monday) instead of March 31. This move allows district administrations to make decisions that better suit local circumstances, including festival arrangements, public convenience, and law and order management.
Decision Reflects Administrative Flexibility
The government’s decision is being seen as a step towards respecting public sentiments while also ensuring administrative efficiency. It provides greater autonomy to district-level authorities to respond to ground realities. Experts believe that such flexibility enables smoother coordination of events and improves public convenience during important religious occasions.
With this new directive in place, attention will now shift to individual district collectors, who will decide the holiday date based on local requirements and conditions.
