A wave of confusion and concern spread across India on Saturday morning when, at around 11:45 AM, millions of mobile phones simultaneously emitted a loud siren alert. The message appeared on screens in both Hindi and English, and was also read aloud after the sound stopped, catching many users off guard.

While some people were alarmed by the sudden alert, others were left confused about its purpose. However, authorities quickly clarified that the alert was part of a nationwide test conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The alert was part of a trial run of India’s emergency mobile alert system, designed to deliver real-time warnings during disasters and critical situations. NDMA has integrated SMS services with Cell Broadcast (CB) technology, enabling alerts to be sent simultaneously to all active mobile devices within a specific geographic area.

This nationwide test was conducted across all state capitals and the Delhi-NCR region. The alert message was delivered in multiple languages, including Hindi, English, and various regional languages, clearly stating that it was only a test and that no action was required from the public.
The government had already issued prior communication advising citizens not to panic upon receiving such messages, emphasizing that the exercise was purely for testing system readiness.

To strengthen emergency communication, an integrated alert system called ‘SACHET’ has also been developed by C-DOT. This system is based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) and is now operational across all 36 states and Union Territories in India.
Officials stated that such testing plays a crucial role in enhancing the country’s disaster preparedness by ensuring that timely alerts can reach citizens during emergencies like earthquakes, floods, or other crises.
Experts believe that this initiative will significantly improve India’s ability to minimize loss of life and property by delivering fast and reliable warnings when it matters most.
